Dallas Bathtub Services Refinishing In The DFW Metroplex

Bathtub, shower, tile and vanity refinishing is such a valuable service if correctly completed. As an owner operated bathtub refinishing business based out of Dallas TX since 1991 I have seen many individuals, some D.I.Y. and some professional, that think bathtub refinishing is nothing more than painting a strong epoxy paint on a very clean surface. They mean well, it looks good for a few weeks and then they blame the lack or preparation as the cause for the failure.

Understanding Why Surfaces That Are Painted Fail

The failure can be caused by a number of factors but the most important one that I have seen is the lack of knowledge and science used when refinishing these surfaces. I promise, I am not trying to be some all knowing guru and I would never deliberately make a person feel bad for trying. However, without the proper coatings, the proper molecular bonding agents there is just no way the paint will last. Allow me to point out some steps below on how I refinish a bathtub. Also I have a short video on my website at Dallas Bathtub Services.
  • Cleaning the Bathtub is a definite key point but you must keep in mind the cleaner should leave no residue whatsoever. In fact the gloves that are worn are not so much to protect me from the cleaner but to protect the clean tub from the oils of my skin because it will make a huge difference in the bonding process.
  • Cleaning a bathtub with a good strong chemical like lacquer thinner sounds like a great idea, until you understand lacquer thinner has a percentage of silicone in it and silicone is a huge problem when refinishing. (It also causes a problem when other refinishers use lacquer thinner to thin the epoxy or Aliphatic Acrylic Urethane paint they are about to spray on the bathtub). This is why I use multi resin copolymer coatings made specifically for the bathtub, shower and tile refinishing industry and thinned with the specialty thinner that goes with that product. When cleaning the tub I use professional strength cleaners made for our industry that instead of smearing oils and soap residue it melts the residue to the cleaned away from the surface.
  • Etching the old surface is also an important step left out of so many refinishing jobs. When I first started in 1991 we used hydroflouric acid (which is a very dangerous acid and simply not needed with todays technology) I use a spun fiber disk rotating at over 2600RPM to etch the old surface. Or if the tub is a 1950's era or earlier tub with very hard baked porcelain there is an etching solution that can be handled with bare hands, yet through advanced technology now etches the porcelain to deglaze the tub or tile and put microscopic pores in the surface. This is important to sink the new surface into the old surface and not paint it on top of the old surface.
  • Before the 9 - 12 layers of top coat are applied a molecular bonding must be applied that was borrowed from the dental industry called silane. Silane's catalyst is moisture. When Dentist use it the moisture in the mouth bonds the porcelain repair. When I use it the condensation that forms between the new and old surface contacts the silane and forms a chemical weld between the surfaces. There are some cheap silanes available in bonding agents for automobile paint but I am using a blend of silanes that are mixed together in equal ratios and hand rubbed into the pores created through the etching process and then top coated with water proof copolymer coatings made specifically for bathtub, tile and shower refinishing. Not the water resistant epoxy paint and not the water resistant Aliphatic Acrylic Urethan paint used by other refinishers but a water proof coating, proven in the Industry, chemically welded and integrated into the old surface.

  1. So much has changed in the 3 years since this bog was written! The technology that has been developed allows us to chemically bond (actually chemically melt) the new and old surface! And there is absolutely no worries about condensation because the silane coupling agent is activated by moisture. The really became exciting April of 2022. We have the best chemical weld with the toughest Liquid Porcelain Enamel. This is very exciting for bathtub, shower, tile and shower pan refinishing! In my 30 years in business. I feel this is the looks, longevity and very hard 5 H pencil hardness makes these new coatings an honor to apply!
